Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "Badland faces and bluffs in miniature in the Baldok beds of volcanic tuff about 1/2 mile south of the village of Mengelang. Arekaland peninsula, north tip of Babelthuap Island. The tuffs have weathered to silt loams and silty clay loam. TWS [probably RWS, or Roy W. Simonson] to show scale."

Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "The broadleaf evergreen saplings or small trees in the dense stands that have come up on stony coral sand and stony land, Brown Forest soil materials from limestone, near the east coast of central Peleliu Island. This vegetation, now slightly higher than the reconnaissance truck on the road, has come up over most of Angaur and Peleliu Islands since bombing or gunfire killed the former vegetation 3 years ago."

Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "Deep cut to show soil and regolith from the Almonguii agglomerates along the old right-of-way for the ore railroad leading to the washing mill. This cut is evidently a little poor for mining, though soil is gravelly with concretions. The caves or bunkers were evidently dug by the Japanese expecting invasion. The small cars, now wrecked and partly burned, hauled about a ton of ore apiece."

Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "Small garden of upland taro, tapioca, and sweet potatoes on red Latosol from andesitic agglomerate a short distance from site of I60. Single betelnut palm with feathery top in background, banana plants along edge of garden."

The red soils in the foreground and distance are upland, whereas the dark ones in middle distance are the poorly drained soils of the floodplain proper. Some in forest and some in crops."

Scope and Contents Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "Terraced area of red Latosols from andesitic agglomerate a short ways north of Ngerekai in a hilly landscape. The terraces are reported to have been here prior to Spanish occupation of the island four centuries ago. A few of the terraces were used by the Japanese, but essentially none are in use now. Grass, burned frequently by the Palauans, and scattered pandanus cover the land now. Seven terraces on the near slope, three on the far...
