Racial Discrimination in Housing, 1942-1964
The series contains correspondence relating to racial discrimination in housing and the AFL-CIO's efforts to push for middle-income and low-rent housing program amendments to the Housing Acts of 1957 and 1958. The earlier correspondence concerns the World War II housing situation of newly urbanized African Americans. Also in the series are copies of Shishkin's numerous testimonies to congressional committees and a 1964 AFL-CIO publication on co-op housing. Finally the series contains notes discussing the creation of the "AFL Racial Policy in Public Housing" in 1948 and 1949.
These papers are from the Boris Shishkin files on racial discrimination in housing accumulated during his tenure as director of the AFL Housing Committee, director of the AFL-CIO Department of Civil Rights, and secretary of the AFL-CIO Housing Committee. Shishkin requested the materials be sent to storage on August 22, 1963 and remained there until they were transferred to the George Meany Memorial Archive in 1987.
