Correspondence to Cornelius & Co., 1847-1857

 Series 4

This series contains a number of purchase orders and related correspondence from prominent Baltimore merchants to the Philadelphia-based Cornelius & Co. (alt. Cornelius & Baker): a well-known manufacturer of gas lighting, lamps, chandeliers, and other home/business décor. Notable correspondents include representatives from: Birkhead & Pearce (law firm), Cortland & Co. (silversmiths 1849-1870), Geo. C. Collins & Denson (grocers and commission merchants), Canfield, Bros. & Co. (silversmiths 1835-1865), R & A Campbell (silversmiths 1835-1854), and W & H Spilcker (sellers of oils, candles, lanterns, shades, chimneys, wicks, lamp trimmings and Pratt’s Astral Oil 1833-1882+). This series of correspondence may have come to Mrs. Catherine (Baker) Comegys through Isaac F. Baker, partner in the Cornelius & Baker Co. starting in 1853, and possibly a relation to her. This is purely conjecture. There is no other conceivable connection to Cornelius Comegys in this series, as he died in 1844. The series is arranged chronologically.
