Felix van Reuth, 1861

This series contains one letter from Felix van Reuth, a citizen of Baltimore and President of the Republican Association in Baltimore County. In this letter written to an unknown Union general, van Reuth declines a commission for register of Land Office in Dacota City [Dakota City], Nebraska, and requests a captain’s commission for his son, Floris van Reuth. At the end of the letter is a copy of another letter from Morrow B. Lowry of Erie, Pennsylvania, who witnessed the violence and destruction of the April 19th riot. Lowry describes the riot in detail and the protection and aid that the van Reuth family gave to wounded Union soldiers.
