Manuscripts of Other Individuals, 1923-1977 and undated

 Series 9

This series consists of manuscripts, uncorrected page proofs, and galleys of authors other than Porter. There are also the scripts for stage and television adaptations of Porter's works. Most materials are undated.

The materials in this series are arranged in two subgroups: About Porter and Other Works. Within those categories, they are arranged alphabetically by the author's last name; in the absence of a known author, they are alphabetical by title.

The first group, About Porter, includes manuscripts and page proofs of works about Porter and her writings. It consists mostly of student papers (undergraduate essays to doctoral dissertations) on Porter's work that were evidently sent to her. Only in two instances--the papers of Vicki Martoff and Frances Sanken--did Porter annotate the papers with her comments. Correspondence that accompanied the works was included approximately half of the time and can now be found in Series I: Correspondence--Students, under the author's last name; Porter's comments are often found in those letters. There is also a speech that Eudora Welty presented on Porter, with notes in Porter's hand.

The second section, Other Works, includes manuscripts and page proofs on other subjects. Many of these were sent to her by aspiring writers, some former students and persons she met at writing conferences, seeking criticism or aid. Other works include numerous poems by Raymond Roseliep; childhood manuscripts of Rosanna Warren; a paper and commencement address of Mary Alice Jones, Porter's mother; poems of Genevieve Taggard; and manuscripts for music by David Diamond. This section also includes Eugene Pressly's manuscripts, which include a few critical comments by Porter. There are also heavily annotated page proofs of some books, particularly of Caitlin Thomas's Leftover Life to Kill and John Malcolm Brinnin's Dylan Thomas in America that Porter evidently used to write reviews of the works. Copies of those reviews may be found in Series VI: Clippings--By Porter. Related manuscript materials are located in Series II: Writings.
